Analysing the Probability of Detection of Shallow Spherical Defects by Means of Pulsed Thermography

Abstract The capability of Active Thermography (AT) techniques in detecting shallow defects has been proved by many works the last years, both on metals and composites. However, there are few which these have used adopting simulated more representative real ones. aim this work is to investigate Pulsed spherical metal specimens produced with laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) process characterized a thermal behaviour very far from flat bottom hole so near one. In particular, quantitative characterization carried out obtain Probability Detection (PoD) curves. fact, it common non-destructive controls define limits defect detectability referring PoD curves based analysis holes generous estimation therefore not true conditions. For purpose, series specimens, made means Laser-Powder Bed Fusion technology AISI 316L, were inspected using (PT), two flash lamps cooled infrared sensor. To improve quality raw data, different post-processing algorithms adopted. results provide indications about advantages limitations for offline structural integrity metallic components.
